Working together to keep kids safe from abuse

Safe students learn better, and a strong school climate starts with prevention. The Second Step® Child Protection Unit for Early Learning through Grade 5 helps schools take a shared, proactive approach to child safety that centers student well-being and trust.

Through age-appropriate instruction, students learn to recognize unsafe situations, seek help, and assert boundaries, while adults align on consistent practices for recognizing concerns and responding appropriately. The result is a safer, more supportive environment and a clear, scalable child protection strategy.

I think it’s important for children to learn personal safety skills at school. Unfortunately, a lot of us do not teach that to our children at home. So it’s very important as they grow up to know who to touch, who not to touch, who to talk to, who not to talk to. Schools and families can work together.

Public awareness that strengthens prevention

To extend prevention beyond the classroom, the Second Step team connects schools with the Early, Open, Often campaign—a free, publicly available resource for parents and caregivers. The Early, Open, Often website provides trusted information about child sexual abuse, practical guidance for talking with kids, clear resources for responding to and reporting concerns, and a prevention toolkit families can use at home. The site also features a research-informed video series shown to increase parents’ motivation to have these critical conversations with their children.
